Abstract

Writing skills are considered one of the core linguistic skills that reflect a learner’s ability to use language in thinking, expression and analysis. Among the modern teaching methods that have proven effective in enhancing writing skills is the cooperative learning method. Therefore, this research aims to identify the writing difficulties faced by students of the Centre for Foundation Studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and to analyze the impact of cooperative learning in enhancing their writing skills. The researcher adopted the analytical descriptive approach, through the literatures review and distribution of a questionnaire to 56 students. The results revealed that all students faced writing difficulties, primarily due to a limited vocabulary, and difficulties in applying proper linguistic grammar and styles. The research also indicated that cooperative learning contributes to improving their writing skills, especially in exploring new ideas. The research recommends the implementation of this method in teaching writing skills.
